Set of 4 elegant re-editions Sandstone column bases in the "Grand Tour" style. The "Grand Tour" is that period in the second half of the 18th century when young well-to-do men from the highest strata of European Society travelled through Europe to finish their education and elevate their centre of interest. Greek and Latin Humanities were their favourite subjects and they brought back from their travels a taste for Antique Art. Hand sculpted by our craftsmen their natural aged and timeworn patina gives them authenticity. Some stones spend months in our workshops to acquire the desired patina. Note that the magic of this stone is in the changes that occur when the master craftsman wishes to sculpt : he has to wet the stone to make it friable and soft for the blade. And when it dries, it becomes "hard as stone" again!
