Superb reproduction of a ‘Balbal Stone’ sculpture.
These ‘Balbals’, carved around 3,000 years ago, were memorial stones planted like tombstones to honour the deceased, offering stylised portraits of the individuals they represented.
The one depicted here had almond-shaped eyes, round cheeks like those of a clown and elegantly drawn eyebrows that ran down to a long, thin nose, like an inverted anchor, beneath which was a tiny pinched mouth. Although the stone is vertical, the head has been carved at a slight angle, with an air of perplexity. Carved in sandstone in our workshops by our craftsmen, then carefully patinated to give it its period cachet, it will become part of a collector's Cabinet of Wonders...
